The New Visions-Hunter College Urban Teacher Residency is a
14 month teacher-training program
that fully integrates the graduate coursework of the aspiring teacher (resident) with intensive, hands-on experiences in New York City schools. Within a strong public school, residents collaborate one-on-one with an expert mentor teacher around all aspects of teaching. At the same time, residents take graduate courses at Hunter College specifically designed to align with experiences in urban schools. Residents are awarded a $22,500 stipend during their residency year. Successful completion of the program results in a Master’s Degree in Education and certification to teach in New York City. Graduates of UTR are hired within New Visions’ network of 76 public schools and are asked to commit to four years of teaching in New Visions schools after their residencies. For the 2010-2011 Residency, UTR will be preparing 48 residents in English, biology, mathematics education for grades 7-12 and special education grades 5-9.

UTR seeks applicants who are committed to educational equity and the imperative to provide all of New York City’s children with an excellent education. UTR Residents have very strong academic and professional backgrounds. In addition to having a Bachelor’s Degree in English, biology, math or a general liberal arts degree for special education, residents must be able to work collaboratively with colleagues, engage in reflection and self-improvement, and succeed in a complex environment with multiple roles. UTR recruits an applicant pool that reflects the diversity of students in NYC Public Schools, and is actively seeking mid-career professionals who may be looking for a change of occupation. Acceptable candidates must meet all
requirements
and must not have taken 18 or more undergraudate credits in education.
